Ive returned to my drawing journal... it probably wont be used everyday but i love carrying it around with me...these two pages were the results after sitting alone in a cafe for about an hour and a half last week...

Sia and i did a magazine and sweets swap - which meant i get to read Blueprint for the first time!! And try these wonderful Dutch sweets which could have come straight out of Charlies factory!!!

my current inspirations:

david maisels stunning photographs taken from the air (found thru dear ada)

paulas summer flowers...

still lifes from Jen

oh yes, and ive changed my name (blog)!!!
Ive been wanting to change it for so long and it seems too late for a drastic change so i am now called 'hand' .... :)

Thinking a lot about positive and negative spaces...

Yesterday i watched an old David Attenborough programme 'The private life of plants - travelling' everything that man does is just incredible...i was totally absorbed in this chapter of this old (1995) series..i started scribbling down all sorts of bits of info...

doodles...

todays page looks a bit like a page from a science book...but i was thinking of grids and webs and maps and how im attracted to them...

here are some inspirational links that i like that i think fit in here:

wip-oval - love jens recent crocheted pieces...on their own and within the still life...
light:2 - sharis gorgeous shadow photos recently...
risas spiderweb photos (pref. without the spiders!) which led to...
this link to nina katchadourian and her amazing 'mended spiderweb' series (found through lisa s)
a bed dreams a blue doily dream - lisas beautiful work...

im interested in the idea of a drawing or painting where a specific part of the picture is worked on more with detail and render..in contrast to the rest of the drawing which is more rough sketch...

well here it is... my first journal entry...and ive got to tell you..its harder than it looks...

no censoring, no changing pages when it doesnt look 'pretty'...just going with the flow...im sure it will take me a good few days to get into a comfortable mode with this..but thats ok..

i think i should have started this a long time ago...the reason im doing it is is to loosen up..i really need to feel more free ...i like the idea of writing down words, ideas, thoughts and by writing them down it helps to progress to the next level...

today, i started off with a list of words..synonyms for the word secrets...possibility for a set of paintings...then i saw lisas wonderful find..this fantastic chair..i had the urge to draw it so i did...the drawing is crappy but it doesnt matter...when i draw from life, i always looks at points in relation to other points to get an accurate picture...i found myself moving between the buttons like points on a map...the lines in the worn fabric became the contours of the drawing and i started thinking about the chairs history, the lines of the thread...how stories of past are ingrained in these lines...i enjoyed these thoughts which connected to my rug...my lovely rug..with its years of history and callys thoughts on the old rather than the new..i so agree with cally!

so although my first journal page is not so pretty...it did bring about a lot of interesting thoughts..a good start!
